carving a new hang-out for growing kids - and their parents - in McLean

A midcentury rambler in an amazing location near the Potomac River in McLean VA is home to a growing family. Transformation of a dated and underutilized basement into a fun work/play space for parents and kids alike means the family, at one point considering all options, can stay put and doesn't need to move to a larger house in a less desirable location.

In its design, aggregate lightly reconfigures the space to open up sight lines and increase flexibility. A large wood-paneled rec room is transformed into a family friendly activity center with a movie room, yoga area and game table. A dark 1960s-era “Mad Men” bar is updated as a kitchenette, wet bar, craft area and secondary TV lounge. An au pair suite (bedroom, full bath) is updated to include more living space and a larger window well.
